Thoughts on Polygamy

I watched the first episode of the new HBO show "Big Love"* and it got me to thinking. What's up with this whole anti-polygamy position that we have in America. "Oh no" people say "if you allow ---, it could lead to legalized polygamy." And that would be a problem, why?

Now, I'm not talking about Mr. Salesman** with three different families in three different states who don't know about each other. That's dishonest and unfair. No I'm simply talking about adults who choose to be a family of more than 2 adults. What's the big bad?

So, go ahead, explain to me why polygamy should stay illegal. This is a new blog, and it desperately craves some comments. But, don't go telling me your objections are religious, unless the holy book(s) of your chosen religion do not accept polygamy.***

And if you think polygamy is a great idea, leave a comment for that, too!

I think the time will come, maybe not in my lifetime, but not too far off, when polygamy is just considered another option for adults, and is completely legal. In the meantime, we are taking applications ...


*Not a recommendation for the show; I found it rather uninteresting, and without any characters that I cared enough about to watch a second episode.

**Nothing personal against salesman - just picking a career where people travel a lot. At first I considered using "Mr. Truckdriver", but I guess I'm more concerned about offending him than Mr. Salesman (must be those big muscles from steering the rig). Ah, muscles ... no, wait, I'm getting off on a tangent here, go back to reading about polygamy, please... I'll be there in a few minutes...
